Also, a thought.....even the organic grown in Mexico was compromised by the water they used. Sewage water!! Also, companies cannot be downstream from a cattle farm ,pig farm,etc. Best to go USA products where the inspections are better and more often. One has to always be careful with manure----has to be cured properly. I also use fairly thick straw under my plants so nothing can splash up on them. A little caution goes a long way. I agree with Maggie....the nutrient content in organic is much better.

agree with bamafarmer.....   i've read limited news on the latest outbreak but i bet they may find that this outbreak is ecoli 0157...   thats the one that causes such bad probs and usually the cause of the meat recalls.

 I have a question and hope someone  wiser will be able to assist me.

With winter refusing to let go my pepper plants are still in solo cups in the house.
Normally I have them  in the ground by now.

 What is happening is the peppers  are forking and starting to flower.
Should I go ahead and prune them below the divide or just remove the flowers for now or should I wait until I can get them planted to do anything?

I will be patiently  waiting for your collective wisdom on this situation.

E Coli is everywhere.It comes from many sources.So the best way to avoid it is to wash your raw food thoroughly.

So I've done a little more studying and learned a couple of things.  There are "Certified" and "Non-Certified" Organic Gardens.  Fruit and Veggies from Non-Certified Organic Gardens are found to have MUCH higher incidences of E-Coli and other Bacteria.  Maintaining a "Certified" Organic Grow Operation is MUCH more expensive than just hanging the Organic moniker on one's packaging.  As an example, to be "Certified" a Grow Operation has to ensure that they only use products from other "Certified" vendors, etc.  I'd say Caveat Emptor.

So this is more troubling........    turns out that E-Coli is not necessarily just External to the Veggies but, in some cases, Internal too.  Many Farms have recirculating irrigation systems where runoff water is captured, and reused.  Sometimes that water can become tainted with E-Coli and when used again to water the plants.........     Remember the grade school experiment with Celery and Food Colored Dye?  The E-Coli is wicked into the veggies.

$3.75 per plant is crazy.  What I think is crazier is $1.00/seed for the mammoth or giant variety - and people are buying them.  This is my second year growing peppers from seeds, and it's a challenge!  They are particular in their requirements to germinate (if they germinate), and it takes a lot of babying to get the plants to the $3.75 size.  Some folks I guess just have a gift and can "throw seeds in the dirt" and they will grow, but that doesn't seem to be one of my gifts.  This is the first year I've succeeded so well, but I already have tomatoes on plants I started from seeds I planted just after Christmas.  Pain in the butt - yes, but also very rewarding and satisfying.  Your choice I guess, $1/seed, $3.75/plant, or $8/pound at the grocery store.  Bill

It's my understanding that many (most?) commercial growers pass the vegetables through a wash of mild antibacterial product before going to the consumer.  It's supposed to be something like mild bleach - but I'm really not sure.  I've used manure all my life, but recommend composting or mouldering it for 6months to a year before putting it in the garden.  Rain will cause splashing onto the veggies so that's why I use the method.  If there were a "homemade" wash that didn't mess up the veggies especially lettuce, I would probably use it.  Yesterday my grandson liked my lettuce so much, he "made like a cow" and grazed through the lettuce. I was not around, but the wife thought it was so funny, she videoed it on her phone.  So far, he shows no signs of e coli.......:)

Vegetables and fruit produced using organic method  have more vitamins and minerals and have none of the cancer causing chemicals in them.

It is NOT just the avoidance of toxins. Itís also about what it does have in there, and thatís the superior nutrients.
It is the old saying "You are what you eat".

There was a  study done by the USDA  in 1999 ( I think) comparing essential nutrient content in our food. They found that about half of the essential nutrients  had been reduced by as much as 38 percent as compared to the 1950ís.

 Many of the immune enhancing compounds that make our food taste wonderful, and also protect us from cancers and a lot of chronic disease were missing.

 Mineral contents and Vitamin C are higher, on average, in organically grown crops.

 Basically food grown organically contains substantially higher concentrations of antioxidants and other health promoting compounds than crops produced with pesticides.

and as far as the E-Coli I do my own composting so I am hopeful I let it "cook" long enough to kill any of  the harmful bacteria that may be present. So far so good.
