Homesteading Skills / Robber in the Apiary!!!
« on: July 14, 2017, 08:30:25 AM »
I wore my jacket and face veil and robbed the bees yesterday.. got 10 frames of capped honey and got away with only one wound in the seat of my pants..  Only had the bees since March so I think they did pretty well, looks like around two gallons of honey maybe a little more..

Sweet stuff..

General Discussion / Cover Crop
« on: April 17, 2017, 10:52:49 AM »
Kind of an experiment and sort of a crop for bees I'm trying out..  I just got bees this spring keepers put a couple of hives on the place a couple of years ago and I started experimenting with bee cover crops and think they have found a niche in my garden..

This picture is a strip planted couple of years ago as an experiment.  I let it go to seed die out plowed it and planted over it.  It came back this spring volunteer.  I plan to plant later and let this repeat if it will.  I think it might have come back last fall if it weren't for the drought we had.

Happy Hour / Stolen Crop Netting
« on: March 20, 2017, 08:05:15 AM »
I run my tomatoes on crop netting, last season I left the netting up.   This morning I could tell something was wrong the poles were leaning and netting out across the field.. checking around a deer had gotten tangled up in it and pulled off about 50 feet of netting before getting away..

I'll check around in the woods this morning to find it, I'm sure it tangled in the woods and it got away OK..

wish I had that on trail cam, but I think it was just out of view.. will check later on..   Al

The future son in law came by yesterday and we got his table together.  I have never even thought of building anything this way, there is not one nail or screw in this table.  its put together with pegs or dowels and glue.   I think we are going to get along just great..

Tools and Equipment / Just a old oak limb
« on: December 10, 2016, 02:33:27 PM »
Last week this was an old oak limb that blew down in a storm in the spring of the year.

Now with the saw mill I can take advantage of culls and storm damage..

I had a nice Saturday with my future son in law building it..

Now Miss Janet is going to sand it and get it stained.. Maybe.. :D

While looking over the garden this morning, an idea hit me.. that I should put in a concession stand
some lounge chairs and beach umbrellas.  I could get in on the ground floor of the North Georgia Waterless Beach Movement..

Happy Hour / Door Locks
« on: October 07, 2016, 05:31:03 AM »
few days ago I notice the lock on the back door difficult to lock, it worked but something wasn't right.  didn't think much about it at the time.  I'm here most all the time.  Rarely do I go and stay away for very long.  Yesterday was a rare day I left to help a friend who lives in an other county, was gone all day.  came home to two police cars in the driveway, we had been broken into..
They were quick about it and hit the bedroom guns, jewelry, cameras and electronics.
funny thing, they loaded a 32 mag, and left it.. but took the rest of the ammo for it..
might have to change my name to 'five shot Al'.. :D :D :D

So if you notice a door lock not acting right, keep a tight watch out.. you might be on someones watch list.. Al

Happy Hour / Bayou Gardener Project
« on: August 23, 2016, 07:55:34 AM »
Yesterday morning Okie Bob came by to work on his Bayou Gardener Project is what I'm calling it.

We worked hard together and got the lumber sawed up before lunch.  He is building a large picnic table for the lake side place his son has on lake Weiss on the Georgia Alabama line.  I hope he has help over there the boards were heavy to load.

General Discussion / What to do with all those squash
« on: June 14, 2016, 03:08:31 PM »
Generally my method of growing squash is to plant early and lots of it when the bugs hit it plow it all up.. that means when it starts coming in I have lots of squash at one time.

This mornings picking was a large one, and I was wondering what to do with it.  Miss Janet went shopping while I took my nap this afternoon and came back all excited.  She had taken this mornings picking to the local meat market they sell some produce also.. and traded it all for meat.
So now instead of squash we will be eating hamburger and peppered bacon.

She done good..  8)   Al
