Free Chicken!
« on: August 31, 2016, 03:30:03 PM »
One of my neighbors's Guinea Hens took up residence her with my Rhode Island Reds.  She just came over started hanging out and then assimilated into the flock.

Good news instead of the usual, "There goes another one!"   ;D

If I lived further off the road, I'd have a flock of Guineas. They are the best yard watchdog.

I know this is stupid and maybe crazy,  but I just cannot get used to that Guinea.  I mean their coloring is beautiful like a wild game bird, but that shape?  I think that it look likes a partridge.  Not a chicken.    ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I have a rooster that I hatched from an egg 5 yeas ago and he don't play that.  Nothing or no one challenges his authority.  Guinea listens and obeys!   ;)

I also hear that guineas can be used to clean ceiling fans.  At least Donald tells a story about that.  Ask him to tell y'all about it!   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Mr Bird, if the guinea hen "sets" , put chicken eggs under her.
When they hatch, they will have a hyperactive "mother".
Many years ago when I raised game chickens, I would hatch some off with a guinea hen and really enjoyed watching  the little chicks try to stay up with the guinea.
The 1st day on free range the guinea hen would see a bug or some other goodie , take off maybe 15/20' from the little chicks, look back and realize she had left them and she would come running back to the baby chicks.
In a few days, she would learn to slow down for the chicks and the chicks would learn to speed up too.
It would work out pretty well.
When they got big enough to fly up in a tree at night to roost, it was fun to see them fly up pretty high  in the tree to roost.
Very early in the mornings they would "sail" out of the tree like little birds.
