Calf with broken leg
« on: October 25, 2016, 08:48:05 PM »
Well, it happens every couple of years and today we found a calf with a broken leg. It isn't a terrible break- the skin is good and the break is low. We dug out the old pvc spint, padded it to protect the skin and taped it up. Then we hauled the mama home and put them under the barn shed. The calf splint  must be kept dry and, with no chance of rain right away , we should have a good start toward recovery- barring any skin breakage  and infection. That first white layer is gauze then some vet wrap,  the pvc rounded edge splint, followed by  more vet wrap and  some duct tape.  I had to use my hands so no pictures after this point.  judy

Ms Judy , I am sorry to hear that.
Looks like you did a very good job .

Those broken legs are unpredictable at best.

Good luck & keep us posted.

Thank Ya'll Maggie and Mr Horse. We have had success using the confined area to reduce the walking and the good bandages with the splint. If you ever have to do this, the pvc must be cut in half lengthwise and ground/ sanded to a  rounded edge then a ton of gauze as padding to prevent rubbing .then it is taped up with the vet wrap etc. I will let ya'll know how it turns out .
Once our large animal vet was here when I was rehabbing some baby rabbits. He helped me make a splint for it out of a coat hanger. He didn't charge me since he was here to look at cattle. In fact, we worked on the little thing at the kitchen table.
Our table has seen a lot of things like that , lol, including sewing up people heads etc.. haha !

Broke from getting stepped on?

That is my fear now that I've started feeding round bales, calf getting stepped on.

Most likely  Lane. This usually happens at the feed trough- when they decide to nurse and the cow beside it decides to move. The less crowded the better.
I have seen far worse heal - the key is keeping it dry , confined to a small area and no skin injury from the accident nor from rubbing of the splint.  judy

Also should add that we duct taped the front legs together during the "fix" so it wouldn't fight so as we worked on it.
This picture is from the next day after the splint was put on.   judy

Hi and thanks for asking Double B and All. He is doing really good. He was so active that we decided to put a real cast on so b-i-l brought the supplies home and we did it with water soak type casting.-  It will need to stay on till almost Thanksgiving. He was feisty and tossing me and sis around while we were trying to hold him for the process ,so we had to double duct tape him to get em still. I will post a picture when I can. My computer is acting up but will surely try. Oh, I should add that we used to just do the pvc but went to the casting material because this leg needed to grow back straight.( registered calf)
We found another calf just after, with a broken leg and other injuries but he didn't make it.  He had been stepped on and had pneumonia. :(  We do what we can.)

Thank you Maggie,  it is still hard to see 'em go... but  always gotta try.
A couple of winters ago , it was very cold here for us. daytime highs in the 30's. we had a hypothermic one so I stayed in the med room and keep the little thing warming with a heat pad and electric heater-not too hot but just right. In a few hours , he had warmed up enough to move around and I put him in the stable, on hay  after he took a bottle of warm milk.. a few hours later he nursed his mama. :). My heart is tender and the Lord  pushes me on.  judy

We cut the cast off yesterday and he is getting along fine except for where it rubbed his "ankle" a bit.Gave him some LA300 so should be go in a few days. That is him in the middle of the picture .
The pvc will work if you can't get a vet or if it isn't feasible. You must confine in small dry area though and watch closely.

Thank Ya'll so much .   He is happy about being free of that leg weight too. ;)
The picture is of my bil cutting off the cast .
The other picture is of a calf with some  motion problems. I won't update on him because it s a small chance  but I have to try. I just stood him up in that shot but about 10 minutes later he was  like a sack of potatoes in the sling. judy
