African Geese or Guineas?
« on: February 26, 2017, 08:25:05 PM »
So those that know my homestead kind of know where I'm heading..the chicken coop is getting started this week.. but besides chickens i feel i want something.. got it narrowed down to African Geese or Guinea hens...

Never had ether but been around both.. my + and - of each are what i think but what do you guys feel?

African geese. + they come in a run of 8,

they are good guard dogs.. but i got Too and Oliver..
I got Too and Oliver.. can they defend them selves.
Can be mean to people but friendly enough to want attention, = goose poop on the patio.
Noisy but that is ok.
have access to the pond but would they mess it up?

Pearl Gray Guineas  + they come 15 keets to a run..same price.
they are good guard dogs,, but i got Too and Oliver.
they do not like people, so no guinea poop on the patio
Noisy but that is ok..
they kill bugs, ticks, snakes.

what group will be able to defend or stand there ground to Oliver and Too best?

Don't know anything about the geese, but guineas can usually handle themselves against dogs.  I thought of getting them here because they do do a good job on bugs snakes and ticks,  but just never did.

Geese are heavy foragers and I think they would be a havoc on your garden and flowers.

They both seem like dog food if you don't fence them in, the dogs will love to chase them and they will eat and mess up anything you don't want them around. Put up a fence and get some ducks to lure in other ducks and make gumbo during hunting season, maybe a few geese too to lure those in. They all taste good but guineas are a pain and will beat up everything else in the yard, they also fly really good so the fence won't stop them.

Guineas.

The worst thing about Ducks and Geese is the amount of waste the make. If you will have to contend with Geese poop, you will ring their necks real quick.
