Well I mixed the epoxy and just dove in. They all came out nice..
This not exactly the look I was going for, I had a vision of finishing off the area with thread but with the thickness of the blade it just won'[t happen that way. but I already got another thought on what I'm going to do.. Here's a close up of one after the epoxy kicked.

Looks good Zook.

I have a question: what does "after the epoxy kicked" mean?

Maggs when epoxy is mixed its green and very loose or wet.. as it gets hot or kicks, it starts to stiffen up, curing, if you time it right, and use heat you can shape it pretty close to a shape, within reason.  Some projects like building a Gaff I glob it on then clean it up with a tiny belt sander, then wrap a layer of thread,  a clear coat of another type of epoxy follows. But this project does  not allow me the luxury  of covering up any mistakes with thread..

So after I found out the epoxy came out ok and that my thread idea would not work I decided to stick to the basics and keep things "Cajun Simple"
Got out the little bottle of Testors Black paint and put on a light coat. Yep, this should work..

Next on the list, the art work. If you look at Donald's Avatar you can see I copied this design as best as I could, in the past I used Green vinyl but for this project I wanted something that would stand out a bit more. So I just copied Donald's color and went with Corn Yellow. Also cut out some Flur de' Lis in gold for a suttle touch.

With projects around here I have to always expect issues here and there. Who would think his sweet face could do something wrong, BUT sweet Oliver has been know to open up ice chest, boxes, 5 gal buckets and other things.
This handle was in a box on a chair that he had to stick his big block head into to get it, good thing it was one of the test handles and not one of the good ones.

Another issue I had to over come was how to turn the tools while the finish was drying. The fishing rod dryers I have are to small and could not fit the tools or hold the weight. A rod weights in at about 4 to 5oz, these tools tip the scale at a little over 14oz. A dryer also has to turn slow, like 3 to 6 rpm's. Thought about using a hand drill but would not trust it keeping the same rpm for a long time, the tools have to turn for at least 12 hours.
With help from my buddies in Chat, (I try to log onto Chat's each night at 8pm by the way, stop in and say hey) we or they came up with the idea to use a BBQ rotisserie. ding ding ding we had a winner.

Now that the drying issue was figured out back to the art work. Once the plotter cuts out the work, I have to weed out all the vinyl parts that are not used, then apply a tape to the top, pull the backing off then apply to the handle of the tool after it has been cleaned.
Then it is mounted onto the dryer ready for the finish.

It will be up to Donald on how he wants to do the give away, if he wants to make these raffle items or what, but one thing I do know is, you will have to be at the Get Together to win them.

I’m thinking raffle Zook.  So far we have three items to raffle ... a pole saw, a roll of crop netting and the Hummingbird hoes you’re customizing.  It’s going to be a good one again this year.

Let us know if you're planning on coming so we can get you on the list.

Mr D. All of my stars are still in alignment so there will be at least a couple rusty critters available to be used as you see fit. Don't know what they will be yet as they are waiting to be found in my scrap pile, but they are in there for sure.

So getting down to the home stretch. I both love and hate applying the finish epoxy, love it because its not that hard to do and it magnifies everything under it and makes it pop. Hate it because theirs always some that can go wrong, a gnat, fly can land on them and get stuck, air bubbles can get in the finish, could loose power and cause a sag, it just goes on and on to what can go wrong and I have to do it up to 8 times. twice per handle.
This is the set up I use, its the same stuff that goes on the rods. I put the epoxy, Cajun spice glitter in the little cup with a bearing and it gets mixed up, then applied to the handle, then it has to turn for about 12 hours to set. Heat pops any air bubbles that may have gotten mixed in.

Now that they all have a sealed finish on them I can relax lol. Only thing left to do is cut off the extra pieces of wood off of the ends and seal that part.

Note to self, when you buy a new belt for your band saw do not spend the extra $ to buy 2. because by the time the one your are using rots and breaks, the new one hanging on the back of the saw is also rotten.

So I'm on hold until a new belt gets here.

This is the 4 tools almost done. They each have there own look and I think they are stunning, can't wait to see who wins them.
