Did you ever take a trip that was a waste of time--we did
« on: October 01, 2017, 04:15:21 PM »
We both had heard about Las Vegas & all it's glory as kids, it was one of those far away places we even talked about and wondered about. I still don't know why but one day I called Jewel all excited and said" lets take a quick trip to Las Vegas". what do you mean, she asked. I'm tired of working and want to get out of here a few days. It is so easy to call the travel agency and find what they call a good deal so that's what Jewel did. We were booked at the Frontier Hotel even with a free show seeing Siegfried & Roy doing their tiger acts. The brochure showed this beautiful room with a magnificent view of a beautiful pool. The room was small, hot and behind the wall covered drapes was a little window with a view of the alley full of trash cans. I didn't have to go ballistic, Jewel did, when she got back to the room there was two bell hops and a desk clerk with her. They moved us to the room that looked like the picture without even a word of apology. We saw the free show, next night saw Shirley McClain, next night saw Bill Cosby. Jewel swam in their pool which needed some repair work. This was in Aug. of 82.  Jewel went back once more with some in her tennis club to see the Martina Navratilova---Jimmy Connors tennis match , in 92 I think. They stayed at Caesars Palace and had a good time. I have no desire to ever return to Vegas.

Monroe, I'd have to say no, I've had trips I've enjoyed less than others, but not a total waste of time. I am with you on Vegas though, I've  never been there and have no desire to do so. Glitz and glamour just don't appeal to me. I did once travel from Phoenix to Laughlin, NV to spend a weekend. We did the casino thing briefly and went to Hoover dam. The thing I remember the most about that trip was the remarkable return drive to Phoenix which we did at night. There are some really remote stretches of desert highway out there, without any light pollution to spoil the magnificent views of the stars/heavens. I had never before experienced such a sight nor have I since. I'm sure you can relate having spent time in Tucson.

We've done lots of traveling and this was ,IMO, the worst of them all. Our Son and DIL had to make a business trip there and had the same opinion as we did. As soon as they were free they rented a car & went to the mountains , they found a cabin & stayed in it a couple of nights. Jewel didn't let the travel agency off the hook either. We've used the same agency several times since then with no problems.

Monroe, if they're a solid company they should do something to try to make it right. Last year we had a tiled walk-in shower installed. After tile man was done Glass company came and measured for glass doors, saying it would take 2 weeks for doors to arrive. Ending up taking 8 weeks to get here through no fault of our local glass company. Without asking, they voluntarily ate their installation labor charge ($350). That's an example of a good company. We still do business with them.

i went to vegas in the early 2000's with my little old lady friend who lived downstairs from us.  she wanted to go badly and didn't have anyone to go with her.  we stayed on the old strip, which was not great, but spent our days seeing what the strip had to offer.  there was lots of cool stuff to do.  we did the wax museum (got my picture with wax elvis!), the gondola ride, saw a magic show, went to see the fountain show at bellagio and the pirate show at treasure island.  we saw the floor show at circus circus, the roof that looks like the outside sky, the fall of atlantis fountain show at caesars, all sorts of stuff.   i would take her back to the hotel after dinner and then go hang out.  vegas is very different at night than during the day.  mostly i would go down and listen to whoever was playing out in the little band area under the light canopy thing or shop at the little shops.
post something!  c'mon...you know ya wanna...  :)

I was tired when we left for that trip and slept a little on the plane, I think the room experience was what really did it. The shows we saw at night were good. There was a time on some of the past business trips Jewel & I played poker, but on a company expense account. 313 I was service mgr. for the largest appliance co. in the Dallas market during the 70s and 25 years in my own business I don't cut slack for sorry service.

I suppose if you have traveled to many different places sooner or later some of these will be in the news. I was having coffee with Sis this morning, she turned the TV on and Las Vegas was in the news, What a tragic thing to happen to innocent people enjoying an evening. We see the sad situation in Puerto Rico since the hurricane and hurt for those people. Jewel & I was a week in Fajardo which was among the first place to be hit.

Monroe----Puerto Rico is and was a poorly managed, fiscal MESS-----before the hurricane!!!!!. They were in no way prepared for even a small disaster. This is why citizens should drain the swamp of all the pocket lining, self serving govt leaders. Feel so sorry for all the hardworking everyday folks there.

yes I'm aware of the mess of things before the hurricane, even when we were there in 73 there was a small revolution going on. we also met lots of mighty fine people. I've always been interested in the construction of buildings and like in Mexico, Puerto Rico seemed to be very lacking. I watched some concrete work being done off & on the week we were there. A floor on a second story was being poured , I could only just shake my head. I've had my day using politics, I don't pay much attention to all the BS anymore.
