General Discussion / Re: Getting rid of fire ants

I haven't tried this on ants, but was told it will  kill them as well.   Take some table syrup, about 1/4 cup, and stir in some boric acid powder, about 2 teaspoons, and stir it real well, then apply the syrup to a stick, and place it about 2' from the mound,    I tried this on those Large Roaches, we have in our shop because of the feed we keep there and in about a week they all disappeared,   Worked real well on them maybe it will do the same thing for the Fire Ants.  Good Luck

Gymgirl  Keep in mind that the various fertilizers will change your soil PH.  Ammonium sulfate will lower your soil PH.  You would use it if you need sulfur to improve your soil or if you are trying to lower your soil PH.

Calcium Nitrate on the other hand will raise your soil PH and is used with lower soil PH and soil low in calcium.

If you are just trying to add N to your soil, such as sidedressing corn,  a better choice would be ammonium nitrate which is 34-0-0 NPK and will not screw with your PH.

So Like BB says you need a soil test to see which one you need.

Hope this helps

Thanks Ben.

I found one yesterday from Old Alabama Gardener that looks like a good bit of fun and we get the chance to bite them back.  I think I try this one first and then try the Club soda if this one doesn't work.

Link to OAGs video:

Recipe for spray
1/4 cup Orange oil
1 Tbsp baby oil
1 Tbsp dish washing soap

Put all in 32 oz spray bottle and fill the rest with water.

Disturb the mound and spray away. Kills on contact.  Revenge taken.

Wood chip-----the steroids will truly wire you. Ha, take advantage and get stuff done that you don't like to do....sounds like you already have started!!! Hope the tinnitus eases off to a bearable amount. My sister has it and says she just got used to it eventually. Maybe yours will go away as the inflammatory nerve symptoms subside with the steroids treatment. Hope so!!

Thanks all-Best way to use Calcium Nitrate is to dissolve in a  lot of water and pour over tightly growing crops like carrots.  I bet it is best to bury and water well Ammonium Sulfate like Ammonium Nitrate so free nitrogen will not pass into the air and become useless .

It really depends on what your soil test shows as to which of these you would use. My corn ground showed that I was low in nitrogen so I will use it to bring my nitrogen levels up. Ammonium sulphate is 21% nitrogen and 24% sulfur. These are inorganic salts but before adding any of this to your garden I would highly recommend a soil test. There are other methods that may suit you better in raised beds but larger plantings benefit from larger applications.

Someone that knows way more about fertilization should be able to weigh in and provide more information.

A little something different than your typical flower blooms this morning. These shoots are sending up a long stalk that will produce a seed pod. Things have warmed up enough for them to start doing their thing.
