We only got about 5" in that storm before it turned to rain and it has been so warm it all melted.
Now in the western part of the state that is a whole different situation. They got buried.

Here is a picture during the storm:

You're right agragarden

With two Border Collies I have NO choice but to keep moving!

These days it takes me a litttle longer to finish my daily list but I am OK with that.

I don't  like the  severe cold or oppressive heat but I do not mind the snow

In fact I prefer it  to  our Autumn and Spring MUD seasons.

Snow gets shoveled or plowed and stomps off your feet at the door:

Mud on the other hand well see what I mean:

Since winter pictures are fun and it has been awhile I figured it was time to resurrect the thread:

View from the guest room window:

The inlet stream from the silt pond has flowed all winter

Meaning the exit over the temporary dam was also flowing.

Thanks Chips The male looks like a section of stained glass.

Zook I think the reason they may not want to nest in your pond is probably the same reason they don't here. I read that they prefer 5075% vegetative cover and I am not going to turn my pond into a marsh so every year they stop by for a rest and a snack and move on.

We have had a nesting pair of wood ducks at our lake house for as many years as I can remember. There is a large oak tree with a hollowed out spot in it and the wood ducks a first to claim it each year. They are beautiful to look at.

Well we are back at.

First thing  we had to do is to break through the dam and  gradually drain the pond " again"

We needed to clear a section of forest on this side of the dam big enough to accommodate the tons of dirt we would be removing from the pond which means we are working on firewood while the pond is draining.

While the pond was draining we worked on clearing the area for the dirt and muck. Which means we worked on bringing in some firewood.

We decided to weed wack the entire east bank and hauled  all of it away.No point in adding more debris to the area we cleared for the pond dirt and we are hoping it will help to dry out the banks quicker.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Had a couple of dry days so Jim was able to get started

I forgot to take pictures of BEFORE sorry

The area down the mountain side is  not as impressive from this angle

but hopefully this one tells a better story:

Maggie,

Are you taking the pond all the way to the woods on the mountain side? You guys are going to have a first class fishing hole when you get done.

Double B The pond will not go back to the dumping area! The exit stream is just to the left of that area.

There will be a waterfalls at the dam with a small pool at the bottom before it continues its path down the mountain adjacent to that area. We are thinking a nice location for a "Tiny House" or maybe we will build a Gypsy wagon wait I am getting ahead of myself We have a lot to do before we get to that point.

Our next step is reclaim the banks  which will deepen the pond edges on the original section of the pond.

Then move to the west side and dig out the cattails and enlarge the pond area on that side.

When we are done we will be restocking with crayfish, fathead minnows, golden shiners, yellow perch and large mouth bass.

Thanks Gopher! There is something  very special about living with a view of a body of water.

More to come ......

Thanks for the update Maggie. Our pond sees a lot of use from the local kids. We don't let adults fish it but all the kids know they are welcome. Most catch and release but a few keep enough for a fish fry. I would like to enlarge our pond too but that's another project that will go on the list of things to do ;)

The weather has been HOT and breezy so the banks have dried up enough to start again.

The pile continues to grow!
