General Discussion / Re: What did you do in the garden today ?

Those cantaloupes are gorgeous!  Very fine job, indeed!!!

I got nothing more done outside over this past weekend.  That heat is oppressive!!!
So, I played inside, instead.  I made a cheesecake & BBQ ribs in my InstantPot.  I have filling for another cheesecake already made, and I have some pork chops brining in the fridge.  I'll do those and the front lawn this evening.  "Nat'l Night Out" on my block tomorrow.

I also pulled out my kit and started lacto-fermenting.  I picked all the jalapeno peppers from my plants, and filled two quart jars of whole peppers in a saltwater brine to ferment.  Unfortunately, I didn't realize whole peppers will need to process for at least a MONTH!!!

So, I found some beautiful jalapeno peppers at the store, and bought 4 lbs. along with some fresh carrots and garlic.  I used my mandolin to slice the peppers and carrots, and ended up with two 1/2-gallon jars of a pepper, carrot & garlic medley, a 1/2-gallon jar of just peppers, and a pint jar of just peppers.  Whew!!!  4 lbs of sliced peppers is a LOT!  However, the sliced peppers will be ready for sampling this Wednesday.  If I like how they taste, they'll go into the fridge to slow down the fermentation process, and should last 6-12 months in there.  Mine, however, will last FOR-EH-VER cuz they are soooooooooooooo hot!!!  Next time, I'll scrape out the seeds and membrane, and control the heat.

Live and learn!

Happy Monday, ya'll! :-*

It was finally dry enough Monday to get to the overgrown yard!

Because it was threatening to rain again at any time, I quickly weeded another bed.  Then I spent the ENTIRE first half of the day whacking overgrown weeds around the raised beds and the yard perimeter, moving planters, and finally mowing.  Then, it started raining out of nowhere at noon,  for about 15-20 minutes.  I had already taken about EIGHT lifesaving breaks for water and air conditioning, so after the sun burned off the raindrops, I got back at it around 2:15.  When I tell you it was HOT outside, whew!!!!!

I was entirely too pooped to blow the grass....

Yesterday, I bought rebar to re-anchor my hoops for winter, and cow manure.  Between that and my homemade compost, I should have more than enough organic amendments to top off each bed.

Broccoli and Eggplants are hardening off, and should be going into all that organic goodness by Friday.  After I get them in, I need to start beets, cabbages and kale.  And, decide which of the beds to toss in the carrot seeds.

A veggie gardener never stops working...

Hi, guys!

I was high and dry!

It rained really hard, and really long, yesterday, but, my street was not flooded.  I was concerned because of water pooling in a surrounding construction zone, but, toward the evening, the rain let up in pockets that allowed some of the water to run off before it got into our subdivision.

God is very, very, very good!

After I heard we were getting rain starting Tuesday through this Thursday, I raced outside and worked late Monday night.

I weeded another raised bed, dumped seven 5-gallon buckets of homemade compost to top it off, forked it in, screeded the bed, laid the cattle panels on top to thwart the squirrels, and smiled this morning when I saw all that rain watering that soil!

My hope is to transplant all the broccolis in this weekend, and at least a few more of the tomato plants -- but, only a few...times getting real short, but, the heat is holding on.  All I need is 60 days, LOL!  I might just get 'em at this rate!

Deep South Homestead over on YouTube has done a series of talk videos on the changing weather patterns, and current growing conditions.

I would recommend starting with his video last week entitled, "I'm Suffering."

In today's video, he dug up sweet potatoes.  You'll be shocked at what he harvested from two 150' rows....

And, it's predicted that harvests will be smaller and smaller in the next years, due to the weather changes.

I put 40 past tomato seedlings under the patio cover Saturday evening, to start hardening off.  They're still in the 12 oz. cups.  Forgot to water them yesterday, and they all swooned.  I'm this close to tossing them all -- especially cuz I have about the same number of a different variety in the house, still under lights....

I had to trim the broccoli seedlings back to the main stem and maybe 2 leaves each.  They took off in my cool A/C, and the larger ones crowded each other out.  The runts underneath were suffering, so, after I captured all the space back from those tomatoes that went outside, I spread the broccs out and gave the runts a manicure.  Only the strong will survive, but, I'll get great broccolis from them!

The larger broccolis are doing fantastic -- too fantastic...I need it to be cool outside...

Looks like all the broccolis are gonna get planted pretty deep.  I did an experiment a couple years ago with how deep I could transplant them in, and they, and the cabbages did fine going in a little deeper than the soil line.  There is hope.

HAPPY MONDAY, YA'LL!

I do what Mr. Bobcatgardener does, only inside, under the lights...it's much too hot out now for just about ANYTHING, especially the brassicas!!

They'd just swoon in all this heat!

I just LOVE you guys! :-* :-* :-*

Watered the garden. >:(

Was considering ripping all the pepper plants that were drooping.  This heat is brutal!!  But, they seemed to have perked up after a looooooooooong drink.  I may cut them back by half this weekend, and see what that'll do for them, going into the cool in about 2-3 more years, LOLOLOL!!!!

Ok.

After reading Brent's (Double B) post, I see I need to get my seedlings in the ground this weekend.  I was up early this morning lifting the grow lights, yet again.  They're in the clear 16 oz. cups, and stand ~12-14".  I can see the roots through the cup, and, fortunately, they haven't started binding around.  And, I don't want them to!!!  So, hardening off starts today for planting out this weekend.

AND, start more green beans!!  Cuz, all that rain predicted for this weekend will give them a great headstart.  FREE water, LOL!

Uh, so where's this recipe?

Boudin,
What size pots do you have your tomato seedlings in?  Mine are almost 10" tall, with 3 more weeks to go!  They're in 16 oz clear plastic cups.

Sure don't wanna have to pot them up again!

Champs!!!!

I am JUST seeing this, and I am sooooooooooo sorry.  I use ReaLemon in the 2-pack bottles from Sam's Club.  The bottle says it's 100% lemon juice.

Remember, you ARE making a concentrate that you will dilute with 3 pints of water when you're ready to make a half-gallon batch.

Next time you need a fast answer, and I'm not replying, send me a d-mail!!!

I hear yah on that slowing down, thing.  I'm getting there, soon...

WE GOT RAIN LAST NIGHT!  LOTS OF RAIN!!  My zukes look like they doubled in size, and "the peppers perked, per the precipitation!"

Try saying THAT three times in a row, LOL!

I potted up 20 Gretel #eggplants, and 28 tomato seedlings.  More to go.  At least I'm staggering the harvest, LOL!

Happy Thursday, ya'll!
