How to keep birds from eating my figs
« on: May 06, 2016, 08:04:29 AM »
My fig tree has more fruit on it than it has ever had, but not enough to share with the birds. How do l keep the birds from eating them?

I will be watching this post because the mockingbirds are circling my blueberries waiting for them to ripen. When I was on the mower yesterday, I noticed they were flying onto the apple trees knocking them off and pecking them on the ground. Can't shoot them because they are our state bird and I do love to hear them sing but they sure are aggravating  >:( >:( >:(

Hopefully someone has a good suggestion. Covering them is not really in the cards for me as it would take too much effort.

Netting is the only way I know of. Either drape it directly on the tree or build support beams around the tree and drape the netting over that.

I have been using this flash tape on my 2 blueberry bushes.  I put it up before they start ripening.  For my figs, I try to stay ahead of the birds.  I try to keep the figs picked before the birds get used to eating them.  Sometimes the only solution is a pellet gun.

Dwight,

I see your in Lake Charles.  Go to a net shop and get an old shrimp net.  That has worked for me.   They just burn the old ones so you shouldn't have to pay anything.

Dwight let them eat them. I live in Lake Charles behind Stine's. My tree produces more figs than I can eat, can, and let the birds eat the ones on the top. I will let you come over and pick all you want.
My hobbies are hunting, fishing, gardening and foraging mushrooms.

What works for me with figs and blueberries is to plant enough for me and the birds.

I like singing birds too and get a lot of joy from them.  I use netting from Amazon- it is really lightweight - but once in place is a deterrent.
