Hollyhock

Growing for the first time this year from seed in Northeast Pennsylvania between zone 5 and 6. On all the seed packets I have they say they are biennial for my area. Anyone have any advice for me? is it better to start them indoors or direct sow?

I used to grow them at my last house.
The first time I started them inside From that point on I let them self seed.
