Help Planting Sweet Potatoes
« on: May 30, 2019, 07:49:05 PM »
I need some Pointers about raising sweet Potatoes, I know U plant slips, and I have a source to get some slips,  The main thing I need help with is what size row do i need, Do I Need a full size row, and plant on top of the Row? or do I need to start with a small row and add dirt like with Irish Potatoes, seems like when I have seen a field just Planted with the short pieces of Vine, they are on a Nice size row, also how far apart do U space the slips on top of the row, I was guessing about 1 ft.

Thanks for any Help U Might have

Rat,

Just start with a regular row. You don't need to hill the dirt like you do on new potatoes. Plant them about a foot apart. The slips will spread like crazy. I planted two rows and they were five feet wide. By the end of the growing you couldn't tell where one row ended and the other started. They were easy to grow for me but you do need to cure them after harvest before you eat them. Good luck!

Thanks Double D, That's the info i was looking for, Once i get the slips going, do they need to be watered very often, seems like the places i have seen them grown, it dry land, I can water with drip tape, and that the way I will get them started, I made my row yesterday, and will get my slips Monday

Thanks Rat

They are typically grown in sandier soil than I have but should be kept moist so they don't get dried out at first. Since you have drip tape keep them watered lightly until they are well established. It won't take long and the slips will put out runners everywhere.

Well Just wanted to report back about the Sweet Potato Planting, I got the slips and planted a 55 ft row, spaced them about a ft apart, Yesterday i noticed that all but 5 slips had taken hold, so today i filled in the skips, I think we are on the way for a Sweet Potato Crop , I will report back when Harvest times get here

Thanks for the Pointers Double B
