Black Wasp
« on: August 09, 2019, 09:41:31 PM »
I was trimming Hedges yesterday, came across some Black Wasp, Pitch Black, they are the same size as a Red wasp, they seem to fly faster and stay stirred up longer, they almost shine they are so Black, I have not located the nest, i know with in a ft. or so where it is located in the bush, must be a good size nest, because when they first started flying there was a dozen or more mad

This is a first for me, I have never seen this type wash, Just wondering if any of U have ever had dealings with this kind of wasp,

I always just called them Black Wasps. I have seen a few over the yrs in my garden....were not aggressive to me. Never saw more than one at a time....usually around my beans. They are large and hyper acting...a little startling at first!!

Rabbit U are sure right about them being Super HYPER, I plan to mix up something like maybe Talstar and give that part of the Bush a Good wet down all at one time, like out of a 5 gal bucket, maybe mix it strong with some Dawn soap in the water also,

Could these be Mud daubers? If so they kill a lot of spiders and such

The don't look like mud daubers....at least not the ones I have seen in my garden. I actually leave the black wasps alone....think they are good pollinators and have never attacked so far.

USMC I don't think they are Mud Daubers for a couple reason, their body is not like the daubers I have seen, and there are to many of them swarming around the hedge when i stir them up, with in just a few sec. they are flying all around, takes them a while to settle down, I will have to see if I can get a picture of one, I have not been back to try and deal with them yet,

Lakerat1-I learned this lesson the hard way some years back.  Your black wasps may have been harmless, but stinging wasps do sometimes build in shrubbery.  If I have to trim shrubs in the summer the first thing I do is take a pole, rake, or whatever and whack all the bushes to see what flies out.  Having said that I do all my trimming in the fall.....

Great Idea Mater, only thing is one type hedge we have grows so fast they would have 2 to 3 ft. growth in a years time, we do have some bushes that only require trimming 1 time a year,
