Hey dudes and duddettes!....need some groupthink help here
« on: September 04, 2019, 10:30:03 AM »
this past friday, the young man that mows my grass, unbeknownst to any of us, picked up a rock and busted my back glass on my old truck....its no big deal because this old truck is a 1995 and the cost of a glass is probably worth more than it is...i only had liability on it, so no insurance....what i intend to do is cut a piece of 1/4" paneling to fit the glass space, paint it and go from there....i only drive it to the chicken house and to the post office in order to keep the battery up, so having a back glass that looks like cedar is just fine....i need some ideas on what to put over the paint to seal it...no thompsons water seal suggestions please....i could pee on it and do as much good as that stuff does....i want something that would last longer than a year....i intend to clean up my shed and move stuff so i can park it under there when it rains anyway....but everyone on the face of this earth knows that i will forget to do most every time, so hence, the need to seal it

Not sure how the laws are over there but here in louisiana you cannot get the truck inspected not being able to see out the back glass.

As far as sealing it. Use flex seal. Put a few coats but I have used it before for different things on old trucks and have had good success.

I have 3 old truck I keep rolling a 93 94 and 96 Chevy. The back glasses on them are 275 dollars. Lol

He would be cutting my grass for free for a while if he did it on purpose.

oh no, austin would offer to pay for it if he knew that it was him that did it....he don't even know about it and i ain't going to tell him...we don't have to have vehicles inspected over here.
i think i will go with the flex seal, i had forgot about that stuff

Champ I threw a mower rock & knocked a hole in our travel trailer window. Went to HD, found a piece of plexiglass , used a fine tooth metal blade in my jig saw , cut it to fit, & sealed it into the frame with silicon sealer, been in there a long time, no problem.----Monroe

Mr Champ, sorry to hear that  and I agree with Mr Monroe on the plexiglass .

Another choice is do you have a "junk yard" near by?
If you had another back glass that will fit  from another truck , it is  a simple job and it would be safety glass too.
Some times  a person skilled in auto glass repair can replace it very reasonable.
Good luck.

I made a windshield for my RTV out of thin plexiglas. Since it was in the front, I had to reinforce it but with a back window as in your case, I think you could just pop it (thin)  in the channel .  it might vibrate but thats what caulk is for. Then it'd be watertight too :)

LOL Champ, reminds me of the time in Mexico, a fellow took us to the bull fight arena in a car that didn't have a back glass, about half the head liner was hanging out flapping along. But I will have to say the ride was cheap.

I did not read all the suggestions but cut a piece of plexiglass and fit it in the spot where the glass was. You can get a tube of GE SSG2000 To put around it to seal it against the truck. This is unbelievable stuff. They use it to seal windows in skyscrapers. The place where you buy the plexiglass probably has it. If you make a pattern the glass place can cut the plexiglass for you.
